You cannot legally copy pages from the hymnal and hand them out although some publishers will allow you to copy one page for your personal use.
Musical Works published with a valid Copyright Notice of 1922 or after are NOT free to use.
You can list the hymn number of a copyrighted work on an agenda and use a hymnal to sing from.
The easiest way to understand this is that if it is already printed in a book then someone paid for the rights to print it and you can freely use the book and even tear out a page and use it.
But you cannot reprint it yourself. In this case, someone who bought the hymnal has already paid the copyright fee for you.
- Essentially ALL Sound Recordings are under copyright protection until 2067 in the United States. MP3 recordings listed here are for you to get a start on the first few notes of a non copyrighted hymn and not for redistribution or sale.
Understanding copyright laws for music and hymns made simple:
There are times when, as a Dominican, you may be asked to select the music for a particlar meeting or event, especially when a music minister or other professional music minister is not available. The following is a guide to assist you in making selections for the four major points in a mass where singing is appropriate. The Church offers advice on selecting music for every Sunday of the year but this resource may not be available to everyone.
Suggested Music - BOLD is copyright free. Other music can be freely used from a hymnal:
